Music, the Brain, and the Future of Healing

Led by internationally renowned auditory neuroscientist Professor Xiaoqin Wang, the Music and Brain Science team at Tsinghua University’s Brain and Intelligence Laboratory pioneers interdisciplinary research at the intersection of music, neuroscience, and mind-body healing.

Our team brings together leading experts across neuroscience, music, psychology, virtual reality, and acoustic engineering, working in close collaboration with world-class artists, brain-tech developers, and concert halls. Together, we’re building a new global paradigm where science and art converge.

Opening: Tsinghua Music and Brain Summer Workshop

Welcome to the Music and Brain Summer Workshop organized by the Tsinghua Laboratory of Brain and Intelligence! This exciting program will take place from August 4 to 8, 2025, on Tsinghua University campus in Beijing.

Methodological Innovation

Immersive Music Neuroscience

  • We are at the forefront of developing real-world experimental paradigms for music neuroscience. By integrating virtual reality, tactile vibration, and 3D spatial audio, we are building immersive multisensory platforms to study the brain’s response to music in rich, lifelike settings.
  • Our research focuses on the neural mechanisms underlying music listening, improvisation, and ensemble interaction, with a special interest in creativity, aesthetic experience, and therapeutic potential.

Cultural Exploration

Unlocking the Brain Secrets of Traditional Chinese Music

  • While Western classical music has dominated the field of music neuroscience, we believe Chinese traditional music offers unique insights into philosophy, aesthetics, and embodied resonance. Our team is integrating this rich heritage into neuroscience to explore its potential in emotional regulation, cognitive processing, and mind-body healing.
  • In ancient China, “Yue (music)” meant not only art, but medicine, cultivation, and moral education. We aim to rearticulate this ancient wisdom through the language of modern science, helping traditional Chinese music find global voice and scientific validation.

Music as Medicine

Personalized Healing through Sound

  • In an age of digital health and precision medicine, we are developing individualized music therapy interventions that blend neuroscience with creative composition.
  • With a holistic, body-brain integrated approach, we are designing gentle yet effective therapeutic strategies for conditions such as depression, anxiety, autism, stroke-related brain injuries, and neurodegenerative diseases.
  • At the Music and Brain Science Lab, we envision a future where music becomes your personalized prescription for the mind and brain.

Education and Outreach

Training the Next Generation

  • In July 2024, we successfully launched the first Music and Brain Science Summer Camp at Tsinghua University. Tailored for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students with a background in STEM, the camp combined cutting-edge theory with hands-on skills to cultivate future leaders in the field.
  • We also initiated the “Scientific Concert” series, creating a dynamic platform for basic research and clinical translation in music therapy—where science and culture dance together.

Global Dialogue

Building an International Music-Brain Platform

  • In both 2024 and 2025, we hosted the Bali International Conference on Music and Brain Science at the Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center, attracting worldwide attention.
  • The conference brought together leading neuroscientists, musicians, and psychologists to explore music-based healing, neural mechanisms, and cognitive-behavioral dynamics.
  • We are committed to developing this conference into a global academic brand, paving the way for the creation of a World Healing Music Festival with lasting international impact.

Our Vision

Music as a Force for Global Healing

  • We believe music is more than artistic expression—it is a bridge between science and emotion.
  • At the Music and Brain Science Lab, we are expanding the boundaries of research and innovation by building a “Research–Content–Product–Service” ecosystem for music-based medical interventions.

Follow us to witness the fusion of music and science in action—and to help shape a future that’s not only healthier, but more human.
